McCain Supporter - Palin's Not Ready

One of the five former Secretary's of State, on whose support John McCain relies when asked about the Powell endorsement of Obama, said explicitly that Palin isn't ready to be Commander in Chief. Not only "not ready" but his prelude to answering the question is to suggest that such a question is, on its face, ludicrous:

McHypocrites

Palin Clueless

Its insane how clueless Palin is. In response to the question of what the "meeting without preconditions" argument is about.

Palin appears to answer that Obama shouldn't just casually meet without PREPARATION and without an agenda.

This is just embarrassing. Its one thing to advance McCain's argument -- i.e., that the U.S. ought to demand concessions on things like Human Rights as a "precondition" (i.e. prerequisite to get a ticket to the table). Buts its quite another to not know the argument and mistake it for a "Obama wants to sit down without PREPARING for the meeting."

Stunning.

Mavericky Socialism

h/t Jed and Daily Kos.

What does a __ Point Lead Look Like?

Some history for those poll-obsessed. McCain trails in "national" polls these days by anywhere from a point to fourteen points. A point seems close, fourteen, not so much.

Charlie Cook reminds us of where historical blow outs have landed on that point scale:
As things are going now, this election would appear to be on a track to match:
  • Bill Clinton's 1992 5.6 percent margin over President George H.W. Bush,
the question is whether it gets to(:)
  • Bush's 1988 7.7 percent win over Michael Dukakis or
  • Clinton's 8.5 percent win over Robert Dole in 1996.
(formatting altered from original).

McCain = Socialist, or Politically Expedient #$@*&! ??

Well, Johnny "Maverick" can't get enough of calling the roll-back of the Bush tax cuts (which he opposed, originally, before he flip flopped), "socialist," ignoring the elephant in the room (e.g., the $700 billion bail out of Wall Street).

If that's not enough, here's Johnny, circa 2000 campaign. Sound a little "socialisty"??

Or, was it the sane McCain, before he sold his mavericky soul out to the devil? (psst: that's a rhetorical question).

3/4 Million on Clothes and Housekeepers is "Mavericky"

No wonder McCain-Palin don't want anyone rolling back the irresponsible Bush tax cuts (anyone see any "trickle down" from that VooDoo Economics??) and restoring tax rates on the the uber-wealthy to the Prospertity/Clinton times. If they did,

I bet John Edwards could still get his $300 haircuts, though.

Three quarters of a million on clothes and housekeepers is "Mavericky."
Thee hundred buck on a haircut, I guess, though, is a travesty.

Those Mavericky Eyes

Breaking: Mavericky VPs are Now in Charge of the Senate

Someone might want to alert Harry Reid, Palin, in response to a Third Grader, answers LIKE a third grader:

"the [Vice President is] in charge of the United States Senate, so if they want to they can really get in there with the Senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom. And it's a great job and I look forward to having that job."
Wha, huh?!? Sarah Palin - You are NOT smarter than a third grader.

Rove on McCain

Pathetic

McCain is pathetic:

I think its time to turn this around:
By McCain's own standards, he's got some explaining to do. Based on his associations, who's not to believe that John McCain isn't a: liberal, thief, drug addict, convicted felon, subversive, public-bathroom pervert, and cross dresser, who lobbies on behalf of Saddam Hussein?

Powell Rejects McCain's Negativty -- Endorses Obama

Colin Powell this morning announced that he's rejected his party's nominee, John McCain, but instead is voting for Barack Obama. An excerpt from the post-Meet The Press interview:

Reporter: Sir, what part did McCain's negativity play in your decision, the negative tone of the campaign?

Powell: It troubled me. We have two wars. We have economic problems. We have health problems. We have education problems. We have infrastructure problems. We have problems around the world with our allies. So those are the problems the American people wanted to hear about, not about Mr. Ayers, not about who's a Muslim or who's not a Muslim. Those kinds of images going out on Al-Jazeera are killing us around the world.

And we have got to say to the world, it doesn't make any difference who you are or what you are, if you're an American, you're an American. And this business, for example, of the congressman from Minnesota who's going around saying, "Let's examine all congressmen to see who is pro-America or not pro-America" -- we have got to stop this kind of nonsense, pull ourselves together and remember that our great strength is in our unity and in our diversity. And so, that really was driving me.

And to focus on people like Mr. Ayers and these trivial issues, for the purpose of suggesting that somehow Mr. Obama would have some kind of terrorist inclinations, I thought that was over the top. It was beyond just good political fighting back and forth. I think it went beyond. And to sort of throw in this little Muslim connection, you know, "He's a Muslim and, my goodness, he's a terrorist" -- it was taking root. And we can't judge our people and we can't hold our elections on that kind of basis.

So, yes, that kind of negativity troubled me, And the constant shifting of the argument. I was troubled a couple of weeks ago when in the middle of the crisis, the [McCain] campaign said, "We're going to go negative," and they announced it, "We're going to go negative and attack [Obama's] character through Bill Ayers." Now I guess the message this week is, "We're going to call him a socialist, Mr. Obama is now a socialist, because he dares to suggest that maybe we ought to look at the tax structure that we have."

Taxes are always a redistribution of money. Most of the taxes that are redistributed go back to those who paid them, in roads and airports and hospitals and schools. And taxes are necessary for the common good. And there is nothing wrong with examining what our tax structure is or who should be paying more, who should be paying less. And for us to say that that makes you a socialist, I think is an unfortunate characterization that isn't accurate.

I don't want my taxes raised. I don't want anybody else's taxes raised. But I also want to see our infrastructure fixed. I don't want to have a $12 trillion national debt, and I don't want to see an annual deficit that's over $500 billion heading toward a trillion. So, how do we deal with all of this?

Reporter: Are you still a Republican?

Powell: Yes.

Al Gore Sighing, Redux?

The Supreme Court is Now the "Far Left"

WTF is McCain thinking calling the "health of the mother" a "far left" and "pro abortion" stance?

Its the law as interpreted by the United States Supreme Court. The reason that so-called "partial birth" abortion laws have been struck down by the Supreme Court is that they lack an exception for "health of the mother."

If there are any remaining Clinton voters on the fence, this type of thing couldn't have been helpful in getting them off of that fence. Sure, the hard-core Right Wingers will love that answer, but I'm fairly sure he's already got those folks on his side.

New Hampshire = NorthWEST!?

Seriously?

"It seems like, and in our last rally too, and in other parts around this great Northwest, here in New Hampshire, ya just get it."

I guess when you've spent so much time making fun of "Northeastern Liberals" you have to do somethin'.

Racist

What I don't get is that its OK to smear Arabs. The smear that Obama is an Arab has run rampant on the Right. Now, McCain -- to his PARTIAL -- credit is disabusing his ignorant followers of this fiction.

But the larger point is that it the response is "no he's not" instead of "so what!"

If I were Arab-American, I'd be just as ticked off at the "Obama is an Arab" "smear" as I was at the "no he's not" excuse.

One of the great things that George W. Bush did -- and I don't say that often -- was when he, post 9/11, calmed the American People down and stated that we ought to focus on TERRORISTS in particular, and not ARABS in general.

Would that McCain took that next step . . .

Irrational Republican Anger

Call me crazy, but given the fact that Republicans have run every branch of government for the six years 2001 to 2007, and 2 out of three for each of the last eight years, its tough for me to muster up much sympathy for republican "anger."

Like the guy (there are more graphic and vulgar words to use which are apt, but I'm working on reeling in those feelings) in Wisconsin who was so steamed that "socialists" were taking over the country. Comments like this make the absurd-o-meter explode and cannot even be responded to.

David Gergen, the center-right former Presidential advisor (Rs and Ds), though, sums the state of the insanity well:

My $0.02? This is VERY thinly veiled racism bubbling to the surface.

John McCain's career and reputation is toast after this defeat. He's going to want to retire after this fiasco.

Republican David Brooks: "[Sarah Palin] represents a fatal cancer to the Republican party. "

Wow. How far gone do you have to be when perrennial water carriers like David Brooks call you a "fatal cancer" on the Republican Party. After some pretty flattering statements about Gov. Palin, that's exactly the conclusion that Brooks comes to:

VoteVets Slams McCain on Vet Issues

"That One?"

Are you kidding me? "That One?" Referring to your Senate colleague as "that one" what he's standing two feet away from you? WTF was that? Is that like a "you people" reference to black people? Or, less nefarious, is it just plain rude?

Irony - Voters Rejectiong Sleazy Campaign

There's a line in this clip in which Gramps says that he thinks that a "respectful campaign" will win out, as long as the voters "demand it."

Ironically, it seems they are demanding it, to McSame's chagrin.

This is shaping up to be a landslide of epic proportions.

Dumbing down of America

Here's the state of our jouranalism in a nutshell -- talking head pundits make fun of a politician for a "gaffe" on a word when, in fact, the politician is right and the pundit is wrong:

Full disclosure here: I heard Biden say this and thought the same thing (e.g., he meant "Bosnians" not "Bosniaks." In reality, he meant Bosniaks, which is the correct term for the group he was referring to.

The difference being, I'm not on the TeeVee proclaiming I'm right and he's wrong, when the opposite is true. Wonder if Cokie will demand a retraction from herself.
